PROJECT BACKGROUND
This new facility for the Houston Independent School District consisted of the design of a 86,000 SF, 750-student elementary school equipped with advanced learning spaces. Infrastructure Associates was selected by Harrison Kornberg Architects to provide MEP services with the goal of an efficient design that would eventually result in a LEED rating. Infrastructure also provided commissioning services including the following: site review, establishment of design criteria and applicable code requirement, development and evaluation of engineering design options, cost comparisons, engineering calculations, and the preparation of LEED documentation. MECHANICAL DESIGN Lighting reflecting roofing, and super-insulated walls contribute to the efficient HVAC system implemented in the school. Two chillers and two boilers were selected to serve the campus heating and cooling needs during the different seasons. ELECTRICAL DESIGN In order to achieve a 21% reduction in energy costs, efficient light fixtures and occupancy sensors were used in the design of the building. Natural light usage also helped to reduce the use of artificial lighting in the building. Infrastructure provided power distribution, life-safety, and fire alarm design for the facility. PLUMBING DESIGN The plumbing system was designed with efficiency, and environmental safety in mind. Low flow fixtures were installed for water conservation purposes. |
